Tropical Cyclone Intensification and Fullness: The Role of Storm Size Configuration

نویسندگان

چکیده

The relationships between the intensification rate (IR) and size configuration of tropical cyclones (TCs) are investigated. Theoretically, intensity, configuration, relative vorticity TCs intrinsically linked. TC fullness (TCF) is used to quantify can be expressed as product critical (TCF0) ratio (Rf). TCF0 represents fundamental constraint on shared by at a given intensity lower limit fullness, whereas Rf reveals TC's unique wind structural feature. Intermediate (∼0.55), moderate (∼1.4), thus high TCF (∼0.8) collectively facilitate occurrence large IR TC. Obtaining stable low favors subsequent TCF-TCF0 diagram proposed illustrate co-evolution reveal how they modulate intensification.

The Influence of Tropical Cyclone Size on Its Intensification

This study investigates tropical cyclones of the past two decades (1990–2010) and the connection, if any, between their size and their ability to subsequently undergo rapid intensification (RI). Three different parameters are chosen to define the size of a tropical cyclone: radius of maximum wind (RMW), the average 34-knot (kt; 1 kt5 0.51m s) radius (AR34), and the radius of the outermost close...

Paradigms for tropical cyclone intensification

We review the four main paradigms of tropical cyclone intensification that have emerged over the past five decades, discussing the relationship between them and highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. A major focus is on a new paradigm articulated in a series of recent papers using observations and highresolution, three-dimensional, numerical model simulations. Unlike the three previous pa...

2b.6 Relating Tropical Cyclone Rainfall Patterns to Storm Size

During the period 1970-1999, Rappaport (2000) found that almost 60% of TC-related deaths in the U.S. were due to fresh water floods caused by heavy rainfall. To reduce this statistic, it is important to improve the accuracy of TC rainfall forecasts by examining the spatial distribution of the rain shield about the criculation center of the storm. Previous researchers have investigated TC rainfa...

Toward Clarity on Understanding Tropical Cyclone Intensification

The authors review an emerging paradigm of tropical cyclone intensification in the context of the prototype intensification problem, which relates to the spinup of a preexisting vortex near tropical storm strength in a quiescent environment. In addition, the authors review briefly what is known about tropical cyclone intensification in the presence of vertical wind shear. The authors go on to e...

Rapid intensification and the bimodal distribution of tropical cyclone intensity

The severity of a tropical cyclone (TC) is often summarized by its lifetime maximum intensity (LMI), and the climatological LMI distribution is a fundamental feature of the climate system. The distinctive bimodality of the LMI distribution means that major storms (LMI >96 kt) are not very rare compared with less intense storms. Rapid intensification (RI) is the dramatic strengthening of a TC in...
